The book entitled The Struggle of Fretilin for Timor-Leste’s Independence contains ideas that are the result of empirical studies. This study was carried out through various methods, namely interviews, document studies, and observations to obtain objective information about FRETILIN’s struggle for Timor Leste’s independence. FRETILIN never gave up its struggle to gain independence. They built networks with FRETILIN cadres who remained and lived side by side with the enemy in cities and villages. To strengthen the networks that had long been established, FRETILIN proposed a peaceful dialogue with the Indonesian military occupation authorities, who were in Dili. The underground movement assisted the role of FRETILIN and Falintil in fighting together to achieve independence for Timor-Leste. Resistance is carried out in secret or outside the boundaries of legality or as an underground movement due to an imbalance of power. The independence movement, whether armed or clandestine, was an attempt by the weak party to continue resistance against the colonialists who were militarily and economically superior.
In its struggle to achieve independence, FRETILIN together with the people of Timor-Leste was always persistent even though armed resistance had been crushed. They have various strategies to continue the struggle. They carried out guerrilla warfare strategies and diplomatic struggle strategies abroad. However, the guerrilla war and diplomatic struggle did not do much they experienced quite big obstacles because the two fronts lost contact with each other. This loss of contact was caused by (1) they did not have a means of two-way communication, (2) Timor-Leste was blockaded from communicating with the outside world so that the campaign of the diplomatic corps did not convince the international community, and even the guerrilla struggle and diplomatic struggle almost stagnated. .
How the tenacity of the struggle and the strategy carried out by FRETILIN is described adequately in this book. This book, which consists of 12, discusses the dynamics of the struggle of the Timor Leste people, politics in Timor Leste, the strategy of the Timor Leste people in achieving independence, and colonialism leading to military occupation. In the following description, this book presents a more complete picture of FRETILIN’s figures and policies. Apart from that, FRETILIN’s movements and struggles are also explained. Descriptions relating to FRETILIN’s role and process in achieving Timor Leste’s independence color each chapter of this book.
